The son of French and German immigrants, sculptor Charles Umlauf was born in Michigan and moved to Texas in 1941 to join the University of Texas faculty. He served the school for more than four decades. In 1944, he purchased property above BartonSprings, where he built a studio and garden.
Umlauf’s styles and materials run the gamut, from expressionism to neoclassical realism to lyrical abstraction. He’s sculpted with wood, terra cotta, marble, and bronze. There are more Umlaufworks in public places than of any other sculptor. Many of them are here (along with the works of others), in his beautiful Sculpture Garden.
